Winter Teams First Practice Saturday!

The first practice for all teams this Saturday November 30th will be on snow! Whaaat! What do mean on snow? Yes for only the second time I can remember we will be on snow in November.

What does it mean? It means that we will shift gears from Hiking, stretching and playing soccer to actually sliding on the snow. Bring your equipment and coaches will ski and snowboard with you Saturday morning from 9am-12pm. We will meet in lot 2 at the Teams office. We understand that a lot of you will be traveling for Thanksgiving and not available for this practice. Please do not feel like this is mandatory in any way. If you are around though we look forward to getting together for a great day of sliding and fun with lunch.

After Practice at 12pm we will have a Barbeque lunch for team members and Parents. This lunch will be located next to the Bungee Jumping near the lookout building.

All teams are invited; Freeride, Race and Development teams.

  1. You must be registered for your team to participate. Go to this link to get this done. You can also register Saturday morning at the ski office near Lot 1 before practice starts at 9am.
  2. Please RSVP and let me know that you are coming to the practice Saturday and how many from your family will attend the barbeque. Send an email to RSVP to

Wintergreen Freeride Team

The Wintergreen Freeride team had and excellent season last winter. Team members competed in events at Wintergreen, in the USASA Appalachian region and At USASA Nationals at Copper Mountain. There were some fantastic results and as the team has grown it was exciting to fill some events with one of the largest teams in the south-east.

This year we expect more growth and development. We have a lot of new potential members set to tryout and many returning members registered. Wintergreen Freeride coaches are ready to lead the team though another Winter of fun and competition.

Attached below are the Training/practice schedule and the Event schedule for Freeride team for this winter. We will look to add some USASA events at Wintergreen and as these changes occur we will notify you.

Remember that the Saturday November 30th practice is open to returning Freeride team members (9am-12pm) with a cookout open at noon to parents and team members. You must be registered for the team to participate in the practice and you need to RSVP to let us know how many will join us for the cookout on Saturday. Register @ Click here and send RSVP to

It looks like we might just be sliding on Snow for this first practice Next Saturday. No promises but we do have a considerable amount of snow on the slopes already.

Wintergreen Winter Teams 2013-14 Team tryouts

The tryouts for all three teams are scheduled for Saturday December 21st and Sunday December 22nd @ 1pm. We will meet at the Snowsports School. There is $10 fee to tryout and you can pay that at the Snowsports School desk before 1pm.

You only need to come to one tryout. The requirements to be on teams are listed on on the Winter Teams Page. The ski requirements state that you must be able to make parallel turn stops down steep intermediate terrain with no wedging left over in your skiing. The Snowboard riding requirements state that you must be able to link Heel and Toe turns down steep intermediate terrain without reverting to just a heel slide to control speed. There are other requirements. Check out the Winter Teams Page to read them all.

If you are planning to try out for the Winter Teams please send an email to the Teams Director Chris Shepard with your age and team preference and we will get you on a list to tryout.

The process takes about an hour and fifteen minutes and the coaches will come back and let you know immediately how you did and where to go next. The coaches will have information about other programs through the Snowsports School that can get you ready for the next season if you are not quite ready.

We schedule the tryouts after the middle of December so there is an opportunity to get on snow before you try out. Unless you are a strong skier/rider please do not come to tryouts without having had a day or two to practice and get your feet under you. Another idea is to take a private lesson with a race coach before tryouts to make sure you are ready. You can do this by Calling the Snowsports School any time after the slopes are open for the season and asking for a lesson with a race coach to get ready for tryouts. The Phone number is: 434-325-8065

Freestyle Ski Swap Event

The annual ski swap event is this coming weekend at the Freestyle shop in Charlottesville. This has always been an excellent way to trade out old equipment and find stuff you are looking for at discounted pricing. Please go to the website at this link to see more information and details about getting your stuff into the swap.

Also keep in mind when purchasing new skis for racing;

  1. The correct length for Slalom skis needs to be between your chin and nose.
  2. The correct length for GS skis is an inch or two above your head.
  3. Race skis are narrow under your foot. Skis that are too wide and all mountain skis do not allow you to get the ski on edge fast enough to carve a race turn.
  4. Boots need to have a lot of flex. If you cannot easily flex boots on a warm day in november they will certainly be too stiff on a cold day in January. Err on softer.

Freeride equipment is easier as most of the stuff sold in our region is for the types of activities we are coaching on our teams;

  1. Freeride skiers need twin tip skis that come up to at least the chin.
  2. Snowboarders need soft boots and Freeride boards with adjustable bindings.
